First John Hawley Trophy Awarded

The Hawley family and the Equestrian Club

In memory of John Hawley, the first Hawley Trophy was awarded earlier this year at the annual Students’ Union Sports Awards evening.

John graduated from the University in 1973 and returned here in 1982 to work in CiCS, where he stayed until he sadly passed away in 2008.  He was a good colleague and a great friend to many people around the University. A collection was taken at John’s funeral and his family decided that they would like the money to go towards supporting student sport at the University and this has been used to create a special trophy in John’s name.

John’s family were able to attend the Students’ Union Sports Awards ceremony and awarded the first Hawley Trophy to the Students’ Union Team of the Year. This year the award was given to tThe Equestrian Club, who had taken part in Sheffield Volunteering, performed well in competitions, boosted participation in their sport and also fundraised to help secure the future of the club.

David Meadows,  Development Officer, said, “It was fantastic to see just how important a role sport plays in student life here at Sheffield and John Hawley’s family were delighted to know that his name will be remembered in association with sport at the University for many years to come.”

In addition, the Hawley family have made an extremely generous personal donation in John’s memory which will be used to create a new sports pitch at the Good win Sports Centre.
